What is 3D Printing?

An Introduction to 3D Printing

3D printing is a revolutionary technology allowing individual users or businesses to create three-dimensional objects from a digital file. Continue reading to learn more about the incredible technology and innovation that is 3D printing.

What is 3D Printing?

3D printing is a manufacturing process that produces three-dimensional objects by depositing material in layers. This process is also referred to as additive manufacturing since it adds material layer by layer rather than subtracting, as other traditional manufacturing processes do. The process starts with a 3D model created in computer-aided design (CAD) software; the model can then be converted into an STL file which can be read by most 3D printers.

How Does 3D Printing Work?

Once the STL file has been prepared, the printer begins its work. Generally, 3D printers use a type of plastic filament known as thermoplastic polymers, which are fed into the printer head on spools. The printer head extrudes the filament according to instructions received from the STL file and builds up successive layers until an object is completed. This process can take anywhere from minutes to hours, depending on the complexity of the object being printed and other factors such as temperature and exposure time for each layer.

3D Printing With Apollo Display Technologies

At Apollo, we design tools and components for prototypes or small series using modern CAD programs and print them out on our modern 3D printers:

  • Fast sampling through printed tools for optical bonding or tape bonding
  • Rapid production of individual parts for project designs
  • Highly precise printing results
  • We use biodegradable plastics
