How to Clean Up Your Computer

January 3, 2023

The average computer user likely spends hours a day on their device. Whether you’re working, streaming movies, or playing video games, your computer is a critical part of your daily life. But if your machine isn’t running at its peak performance, those activities can be frustrating and time-consuming. If this sounds familiar, it may be time to clean up your computer!

From the Fortec US team, here are some tips on how to clean your computer to keep it running smoothly:

Disk Cleanup

Disk Cleanup is a built-in tool for all Windows computers that can help delete unnecessary files from your hard drive. This includes temporary internet files, downloaded program files, and system error memory dumps. By deleting these files, you can free up space on your hard drive and improve the overall performance of your computer. To access Disk Cleanup, simply search for it in the start menu and click on it when it appears.

Defragmentation

Another way to improve the performance of your computer is by defragging it periodically. Defragging rearranges the data stored on your hard drive so that programs load faster and more efficiently, freeing up valuable processing power for other tasks. To defragment your hard drive, search for “disk defragmenter” in the start menu and follow the instructions provided by Windows to complete the process.

Virus Scanning

Viruses are malicious programs that can cause major damage to both your computer’s hardware and software if not caught in time. It’s important to regularly scan for viruses using an antivirus program so that any malicious threats are identified before they become major problems. Many anti-virus programs will also allow you to schedule regular scans, so you don’t have to remember to do them manually every week or month.
