How To Be Safer On The Internet

February 8, 2022

The internet becomes more of a vital tool every single day– but are you aware of all the potential threats that lurk around online? Being proactive about your browsing safety is essential to keep you and your data safe.

From the team at Apollo, here are some tips to help you stay safe while online:

Manage Your Privacy Settings

Like marketers love to learn all they can about you, so do hackers. People trying to steal your personal data can learn a lot from you based on your internet browsing, social media, and all online activity. With every application or browser, make sure to check your privacy settings that they are all set to optimal privacy levels, including passwords and two-factor authentication.

Keep Your Personal Information Private

Always be cautious about who you share your personal information with and how much. Most people don’t need to know your full name, address, contact information, relationship status, and more. You don’t want this data to get into the wrong hands.

Use Strong Passwords

Always create strong passwords that consist of a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols, making them more difficult for hackers to crack. As well, never save your passwords in your internet browsers or share them with others. The more secure you can keep your passwords, the better.

Watch What You Download

Cybercriminals are always looking for new ways to trick you into downloading disguised malware onto your devices. They may look harmless, but in reality, it’s software that can steal your information and lock you out of your accounts. Always double-check you’re on a secure and trusted site before clicking to download.

Only Make Purchases on Secure Sites

To make a purchase online, you need to provide personal and credit card information, which cyber thieves are eager to steal from you. So, it’s crucial to make sure you only buy products or services from trusted websites. Always check that your web address starts with “https” and that there is a padlock icon located on the address bar.

Keep Your Antivirus Software Up-to-Date

Whenever you notice your device has a software update, don’t delay too long in installing it. These updates often contain vital security enhancements designed to protect you from any kind of threats.
