How The Internet Started

October 29, 2022

It’s hard to imagine a world without the internet. But, believe it or not, there was once a time when this amazing resource didn’t exist! There is no one answer to the question of “How did the internet come to be?” as there are several groups and individuals who have played a role in the development of the internet.

Below, our team shares a bit of history about the internet and what made it what it is today.

The Creation of The Internet

The Internet’s History

The internet started as a way to connect different computer systems together. In the early days, it was mainly used by researchers and scientists who needed to share information. Computers at the time were very large and immobile, making it difficult to communicate and share important data. In 1969, a team of researchers at UCLA created the first networked computer system called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network). This system allowed different computers to connect and share information.

Other universities and research institutions quickly adopted ARPANET, and it soon became clear that there was a demand for a wider network. In 1983, the National Science Foundation (NSF) created the NSFNET, which allowed all types of users to connect to the internet. As a result of the creation of NSFNET, January 1st, 1983, is typically considered the Internet’s birthday.

In 1995, Netscape Navigator was released, which allowed people to surf the internet using graphics and images. This led to an explosion in web usage, as more and more people began to use the internet for everything from shopping to banking, leading us to the internet we know and love today.

The Internet Today

The internet has come a long way since its inception in 1969. Billions of people worldwide now use the internet, and it continues to evolve and grow. Thanks to the hard work of many individuals, the internet is now one of the most important tools in our society. Think about how often you use the internet; we’re almost certain your answer is “multiple times every day.”
