5 Essential Computer Maintenance Tips

Today’s computers help keep us connected to the digital world and each other, but there are so many different brands, sizes, and types to choose from. However, they all have in common that they need periodic maintenance from their owners to ensure they stay running properly.

Here are some maintenance tips for your computers to ensure they stay working quickly and efficiently for a long as possible:

1. Scan For Malware

Software maintenance can be complicated, but virus protection is one of the most important and easy ways to maintain your computer. Utilize malware detection programs to safely run checks for suspicious background activity that could be happening to jeopardize your online security. Every week, open up your protection software and let it run a full scan looking for any viruses overnight.

2. Uninstall Unused Programs

Over time you’ll download plenty of programs onto your computer, but the more you have, the slower your system will operate. Once a month, take a look at all your documents and programs and delete anything that has not been used recently and will likely not be used again to save space and increase efficiency.

3. Defragment Your Hard Drive

As you use your computer, your files get spread out or fragmented all over your hard drive. Gathering these parts and putting them back together into one file can make them easier and faster to access. Depending on how fragmented your data is, the defragmentation process can greatly improve your system’s speed. Each system has a built-in defragmenting utility, so take advantage of this program regularly.

4. Keep Your Systems Up-To-Date

Don’t ignore system updates that pop up on your screens! These updates help ensure your computer is operating on the latest software. Avoiding updates can lead to a slower working computer and functions stopping working entirely. Whenever an update notification pops up, be sure to install it soon, and since some of them take a long time to complete, set aside some time when you’re not using the computer to get it done.

5. Clean Your Computer

With all the static electricity produced, your computer acts like a magnet for dirt, dust, crumbs, and other debris. The processing units and keyboards both have many nooks and crevices where this debris can easily build and clog up important elements and moving parts, such as cooling fans. Utilize compressed air cans to help remove any built-up remnants every month, and be sure to spray everything!!
