Tips to Keep Your Computer Running Smoothly

October 13, 2020

Trying to use a slow, problem-prone computer can be agonizing, especially when you need to get work done. Performing routine maintenance and caring for your computer is the key to preventing future problems and maintaining a quick performance time. Don’t worry, it’s easier than you think, and you’ll be happy you took the time to do so.

By utilizing these tips, you’ll be able to keep your computer running quickly and smoothly while preventing serious problems with your hard drive:

Update The Software and Operating Systems

The most important step you can take to ensure that your computer is secure and running properly is to check for software updates frequently and update them when available. In many circumstances, you will notice an alert when there is an update, but you need to manually check yourself in other cases.

Uninstall Unused Software

Unused software applications downloaded onto your computer take up a lot of hard drive space and drains the system’s resources quickly. Check your downloaded software periodically and decide if there are any that you don’t use. Uninstall the programs you decide you don’t need to be on your computer.

Utilize Antivirus Protection

Keeping your computer and data safe and secure should always be a priority. Protect against malicious software by installing anti-virus and anti-spyware programs onto your computer. Keep these programs up to date as well to ensure they are doing their job at all times. These programs will ease your mind that you are protected from viruses and other issues that plague many computer users.

Defragment Your Hard Drive

Another incredibly important task in hard drive maintenance consists of defragmenting your hard drive. When you consistently create, delete, and reorganize your files and applications, the hard drive becomes fragmented, meaning that your computer’s data is split into pieces and gets stored in various areas throughout the hard disk. The more fragmented your data becomes, the slower your computer will operate.

To defragment, you’ll want to rearrange your files saved on the hard drive so that they are stored in nearby, easy to find locations. Doing this will also lower the time it takes for you to locate and access your files.

Backup Your Files

Frequently backing up your files and data is a great way to ensure that you never lose anything important in case your hard drive gets damaged. This also allows you to keep your hard drive free of any unnecessary information.
