While many of us are enjoying or adjusting to our new home work setups, it’s important to remember how now, more than ever, is a great time to brush up on your cleaning habits. You’ll spend a lot of time on your computer, so make sure you’re keeping it neat, tidy, and most importantly, germ-free.
Cleaning Your Computer Monitor
Don’t just reach for the nearest spray cleaner because many of those products are great for windows or countertops but can damage your delicate computer monitor. You can purchase one of the many cleaners specifically designed for monitors or make a cleaner at home. Distilled water with some white vinegar is an easy at home cleaning solution to clean and get rid of any built-up grime on your computer monitors. Only use microfiber cloths, like what you would use when cleaning glasses, to clean your monitor as paper towels, rags, and other materials are too harsh. Make sure the monitor is off before you start cleaning!
Cleaning Your Keyboard
Your hands are all over your keyboard, so make sure to regularly clean it to eliminate any germs or bacteria that are hiding. Start by unplugging the keyboard and turning it over and lightly tapping out any loose crumbs, dust, or debris. Next, use a brush to get through the crevices of your keyboard. A toothbrush, baby bottle brush, and other small, delicate brushes you have at home all do the trick. Canned air is also a great tool to get into those nooks and crannies. To rid your keyboard of germs, use a rubbing alcohol wipe, or a disinfectant wipe and carefully wipe it down.
Maintaining a Neat Desk Space
Keeping your desk clean and tidy will give you peace of mind and help you feel less overwhelmed while you’re hard at work. Some tricks to keep your desk items tidy include:
- Use velcro to mount items that aren’t being used on the wall or sides of your desk.
- Upcycle containers to keep like items together, organized, and out of the way.
- Bundle computer wires together with velcro, zip ties, or hooks to keep them out of the way.
- Label your items, folders, and drawers.
- Put items away after their use right away to avoid clutter.
- Keep a trash bin nearby.
- Minimize distractions with minimal personal items and only supplies that you use every day.
And don’t forget to use the appropriate disinfectant cleaner for your desktop and wipe it down regularly!
