Is it Okay to Leave Your Technology Out in The Cold?

The weather is nothing but unpredictable this time of year, leaving us with some cold, bitter nights and so warm, almost summer-like mornings. Though you can’t predict what the next day will bring, you can be diligent about how you protect your technology from constant change. Especially when the first cold night hits. So if you’re worried about cold weather your and technology, here’s what you should consider keeping all your digital assets protected from the elements:

Is It Made to Withstand the Weather?

One of the most significant factors in temperature damage would be moisture. WIth our VacuBond® dry optical bonding process, you can keep foreign objects and water from making their way into a device gap.  When weather consistently varies, condensation is more likely to occur; potentially leading to freezing and cracking of the screen. So if your digital devices are not protected, you’ll want to keep them away from extreme temperatures.

The Temperature Danger Zone

Believe it or not, LED screens and most outdoor displays are meant to work best when it’s cold out. However, this isn’t the case for some other technology like your laptop or cellphone. Leaving these devices in extreme temperatures could lead to a shattered display screen. At the same time, when it comes to business, your outdoor displays may work as well as they always have. With cold temperature actually leading to top performance.

However, there are some cases where the extreme cold could harm your outdoor displays; when severe snow and winter storms occur, your signs could be at risk. You’ll want to keep an eye out the next day for any damage and look to repair any as soon as possible. One fundamental way to keep your screens working all winter long is by keeping them running. Constant on and off could lead to breakdowns. If that is not an option, consider putting them in standby mode when not in use.

How to Craft Ideal Passwords

Let’s face it; we’ve all forgotten our passwords a time or two; however, coming up with a new one might be as frustrating as forgetting it in the first place. Whether you are trying to login to a business system or your personal email, having a secure password is a must. By taking the time to craft a long and hard to guess login, you are doing your part in protecting your identity. So how does one exactly plan to prepare the perfect password? We have a few tips below:

Avoid Commonly Known Things

Though you want to choose a password that will be at the forefront of your mind, chances are the things you’d use to keep it in your memory bank are also things those looking to break in can discover. Anyone looking to steal your identity will first try any combination of your name, birthday, pets, street, etc. Anything that could be easily found about you could be quickly combined to discover your magic combination. You’re better off with a series of numbers, characters, and letters to make it more difficult for those to find.

Longer Passwords Are Safer

A short and precise password will leave less chance for error when someones are trying to break in. However, a longer password, though harder to remember by memory, is the safest option. You may even notice that many sites will require more extended character limits than they did in the past; this is so they can help protect your information as best they can.

Consider Letting Them Pick

Many cell phones and devices will automatically create a random password for you. This is often a long mixture of letters, numbers, and characters, nothing tying back to your actual interests or demographic. You can then save the password for easier logins. You can always invest in a password book to write down any important passwords too.

Use Two Factor When You Can

Ever try to login to social media or your email and need to verify that it’s you? This two-step process adds an extra bit of security if someone does get ahold of your password and signs in from another location. By enabling two-factor authentication, you can be sure that when a site or device that you don’t often use is signed into, you’ll be automatically asked to confirm it was you.

Ways to Attract More Customers to Your Store

Any business owner knows that in addition to retaining current customers, you must always find a way to attract new ones, too. Though most of this will fall into your marketing plan, a big piece of the puzzle relies on your display and signage.

When businesses make the switch from physical to digital displays, they not only promote a more modern and user-friendly appearance, it opens up a whole new way to expand your message and marketing efforts. Also, you’ll be able to do your part in increasing your customer base, especially when you consider the below:

Invest in a Few Upgrades

Digital displays and touch screens are not only more eye-catching, but they are more user friendly, too. Users are more likely to stop and engage with information being viewed and accessed with just a simple touch. For the business owner, changing out signs and messages within seconds can lead to better and more well-rounded marketing.

Strategically Place Your Displays

Is there a specific spot that gets high traffic views? Do you notice current consumers responding to a particular message or sale in a particular area? By planning out where your place the most appealing and high demand signs, you can get the most impact. One of the most convenient things about utilizing digital displays is how quickly you can adjust them, giving you the ability to quickly adapt your strategy as you see fit.

Consider Changing Your Message Often

Chances are those walking by your window front will do so again shortly. If the displays and signage are always the same, they’ll be less inclined to pay attention. For those continually providing new offerings and deals, a digital display is a perfect way to keep a constant flow of new marketing messages. Not only will it help promote all offers, but it will also keep consumers more interested and more likely to look for this week’s new display!

Tips to Keep Your Computer Running Smoothly

Trying to use a slow, problem-prone computer can be agonizing, especially when you need to get work done. Performing routine maintenance and caring for your computer is the key to preventing future problems and maintaining a quick performance time. Don’t worry, it’s easier than you think, and you’ll be happy you took the time to do so.

By utilizing these tips, you’ll be able to keep your computer running quickly and smoothly while preventing serious problems with your hard drive:

Update The Software and Operating Systems

The most important step you can take to ensure that your computer is secure and running properly is to check for software updates frequently and update them when available. In many circumstances, you will notice an alert when there is an update, but you need to manually check yourself in other cases.

Uninstall Unused Software

Unused software applications downloaded onto your computer take up a lot of hard drive space and drains the system’s resources quickly. Check your downloaded software periodically and decide if there are any that you don’t use. Uninstall the programs you decide you don’t need to be on your computer.

Utilize Antivirus Protection

Keeping your computer and data safe and secure should always be a priority. Protect against malicious software by installing anti-virus and anti-spyware programs onto your computer. Keep these programs up to date as well to ensure they are doing their job at all times. These programs will ease your mind that you are protected from viruses and other issues that plague many computer users.

Defragment Your Hard Drive

Another incredibly important task in hard drive maintenance consists of defragmenting your hard drive. When you consistently create, delete, and reorganize your files and applications, the hard drive becomes fragmented, meaning that your computer’s data is split into pieces and gets stored in various areas throughout the hard disk. The more fragmented your data becomes, the slower your computer will operate.

To defragment, you’ll want to rearrange your files saved on the hard drive so that they are stored in nearby, easy to find locations. Doing this will also lower the time it takes for you to locate and access your files.

Backup Your Files

Frequently backing up your files and data is a great way to ensure that you never lose anything important in case your hard drive gets damaged. This also allows you to keep your hard drive free of any unnecessary information.

5 Tips for Taking Care of Device Chargers

Our precious electronics are useless without their respective chargers! You’re probably used to the familiar feeling of worry and urgency when you notice your device’s battery is running low; no one enjoys it. It just goes to show how vital these cables are to help us ensure that our electronics are always ready to go when we need them.

Without the charger, the electronic device can’t work, so you’ll want to give your charger the same amount of care and protection as you do the device.

Utilize these tips to ensure your charger is being properly taken care of:

Unplug By The Head

Be conscious to never pull your charger out of the device by yanking at the cord. This may seem to work no problem, but the tension can cause irreparable internal damage to the device over time. Unplug the charger by the head and as close to the device as possible.

Keep it Dry

Don’t get your charger wet at all, and keep it a safe distance from any liquids at all times, just like you would the device.

Keep it Cool

Extreme temperatures, hot and cold, can damage chargers, just like they do the devices. Be careful to not leave chargers in cars, outdoors, and other areas that can reach very high or low temperatures.

Keep it Tucked Away

No one wants you to trip on a charger more than the charger. Keep the charging cord tucked away and out of the way while in use to avoid injury to yourself. Someone hitting or tripping over the cable can also cause it to tear, the plug head to break, or the device to get damaged.

Utilize Surge Protectors

You never know when an electrical surge can strike, and if it’s powerful enough, your electronics and chargers can suffer. Don’t risk this by using surge protectors.

How to Care for Touch Screens

Touch screens are one of the most helpful and innovative creations from the modern age of technology; at least we think so. The benefits of using touch screens, whether personally or professionally, are endless! They’re also meant to be used often, and you probably have touched your favorite touch screen, your smartphone, at least once in the last hour.

It makes perfect sense that something we use so frequently, probably more than you even realize, should be treated with extra care and precaution.

Here are the steps you should take to make sure you’re protecting and taking proper care of your touch screen devices:

Clean Carefully and Frequently

To clean the glass screen, you’ll want to clean carefully and use something delicate, like a non-abrasive cleanser and soft, cotton cloth. As we mentioned before, touchscreens are meant to be used and touched repeatedly, so make sure to give the screen a good cleaning periodically to avoid transmission of germs and bacteria.

Watch Your Nails

Touch screens are designed for fingers, not nails! Whether you’re swiping, tapping, or cleaning something off the screen, avoid using your nails as the glass can be easily scratched.

Avoid Heavy Pressing

Touch screen technology is designed to be very sensitive to your touch! It can easily detect your finger’s presence and doesn’t need to be pushed with heavy pressure; otherwise, damage can occur.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

Prolonged sun exposure can be very dangerous to screens; they weren’t designed to withstand intense heat, on top of the heat it already emits. It’s possible that serious, irreversible, damage can occur if exposed to the sun for too long.

Use a Protective Case

If the touch screen is able to, use a protective case that fits properly. In the event that the screen is dropped, damage will likely either be minimized or stopped altogether because of the case. Accidents happen, and it’s always best to be prepared!

Steps For Cleaning The Inside of Your Computer

Heat is the enemy of your desktop computer, and it’s cooling abilities are crucial to its functioning. Over time, dust and debris build up inside your computer and then undermine your computer’s cooling efficiency. This will result in a shorter lifespan and possibly serious damage to your computer if not properly taken care of regularly.

Follow these steps to help you with the process of cleaning the inside of your computer:

Step 1

Turn off your computer and make sure it is unplugged from the electrical outlet or surge protector.

Step 2

Carefully open up your computer’s case.

Step 3

Grab a handy can of compressed air and use short bursts of air to release sitting dust and debris. Try to stay at least a few inches from the motherboard’s surface, memory, processor, and expansion cards to avoid damage.

Step 4

Use your compressed air to remove the dust and debris from the fans. Hold the fan with your finger to keep it from spinning while cleaning it. Fan blades are delicate and can easily crack, so make sure to be careful. Use rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab to finish cleaning off the dust and debris from the fan. If possible, consider removing the fans from the computer’s case before cleaning for an easier and more thorough cleaning.

Step 5

Next, use the compressed air to remove dust and debris from the power supply. If there is a dust filter underneath the power supply, be sure to clean that too.

Step 6

Again, with the compressed air, clean the heatsink and the fan mounted to your processor. Removing these items for a more thorough cleaning may be needed. Remember to clean the thermal grease off the heatsink and processor before cleaning with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol. Before putting it all back together, apply a new coat of thermal grease.

Step 7

Finish by dusting off all the ports with the compressed air and cotton swabs with rubbing alcohol.

Good as new! Ideally, you’ll want to follow these steps and clean out the inside of your computer every 6 to 12 months to ensure it’s working correctly at all times.
